What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry?

Feeling anxious or nervous about visiting the dentist is something that patients of all ages may experience. But at Made Ya Smile Dental in Sugar Land, TX, our team takes every measure to make your dental care comfortable, pleasant, and even enjoyable. To help patients who experience minor dental anxiety or fear, we offer nitrous oxide (N2O) gas, commonly referred to as "laughing gas." This type of conscious sedation can calm your nerves and leave you feeling relaxed and at ease while you receive care. Ideal for routine cleanings or restorative care, nitrous oxide carries no after-effects and is a safe solution for children, teens, and adults. Nitrous oxide does not make you go to sleep and leaves you capable of driving home right after your appointment. If you are fearful of getting the care you need for a beautiful smile, talk to our team about scheduling a visit with our general dentists and learn about your options for sedation dentistry.

Who Is a Candidate for Nitrous Oxide Gas?

Nitrous oxide gas is a mild but effective sedation option for patients in all stages of life. Before providing nitrous oxide, our team will review your medical and dental histories and talk with you about your dental fears. Our dentists often use nitrous oxide gas in combination with gentle local anesthetic techniques to provide comfort during various types of care. If nitrous oxide gas is determined to meet your sedation needs, we may provide this service during routine cleanings, oral surgeries, restorative procedures, or whenever you are feeling anxious about receiving dental care. Nitrous oxide gas may not be recommended for more severe dental phobias or if you have health concerns, like COPD or other respiratory issues.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation Work?

Nitrous oxide gas is inhaled through a small mask that fits comfortably over your nose. A few minutes before we start your treatment, our team will instruct you to breathe normally while the mask is in place. You will feel the effects shortly after we begin to administer the nitrous oxide gas. This produces a relaxed and happy feeling but does not generally induce sleep. You may also feel a calming warmth and tingling sensation in your feet and hands. A member of our team will monitor the gas and adjust the volume on an as-needed basis to allow you to remain relaxed and at ease throughout your visit. Depending on your care, our dentists may also provide a local anesthetic to numb your mouth and better manage your comfort. When the gas is turned off at the end of your procedure, we will allow you to breathe in oxygen through the mask to restore your levels to normal. The effects of nitrous oxide gas will quickly dissipate, and you will begin to feel normal within minutes.

What to Expect After Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide gas does not cause any lingering side effects and is expelled from your body within 3 – 5 minutes after the gas is stopped. You will be able to drive immediately following your visit and can go about your normal daily routine. We do recommend that you not eat until any numbness has completely worn off, however. In most cases, patients feel normal and do not notice any side effects when receiving nitrous oxide sedation. There is a minimal chance that you might experience a headache, chills, fatigue, nausea, or vomiting. It is best to minimize your risk of feeling nauseous from nitrous oxide gas by eating a light snack or small meal before your arrival at our office and not eat a large amount of food for three hours or so following your visit.

Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation Covered by Insurance?

To determine if nitrous oxide sedation is a covered benefit under your dental insurance plan, our office staff will contact your provider to learn about your specific coverage amounts. We do, however, want your family to get the care they need in the most comfortable way possible. If dental anxiety is keeping you from visiting the dentist, our team can help you find a financial solution to comfortably fit the cost of nitrous oxide sedation into your budget. Made Ya Smile Dental accepts easy payment options and works with CareCredit® to help bring low-interest financing options to our patients.
