Tooth decay that is identified in the early stages is typically treated with a filling or other type of tooth restorative procedure. When decay or bacteria enter the internal portion or nerve center of the tooth, infection results and the tooth must be treated with root canal therapy. Root canals are a type of endodontic service that treats this type of infection and restores health and function while sealing off the tooth to protect against further damage. Without it, the tooth is at risk for being lost and the infection can spread to other areas of your body. General dentists Dr. Joe Prasifka and Dr. Trey Nguyen are skilled in providing root canal care for our patients.
In the past, root canals had the reputation of being unpleasant experiences for patients. With advanced treatment techniques and comfortable anesthetics, however, having a root canal performed is nothing to be feared. Please do not put off root canal therapy if you need it as it may be a treatment necessary to save your tooth and your health. Our Made Ya Smile Dental team in Sugar Land, TX uses a gentle touch when performing root canals and can offer sedation dentistry for a relaxed and positive visit. A root canal may be the best treatment solution if you have a tooth that is severely decayed, injured, or cracked, or if bacteria have found a way into the pulp chamber (internal nerve center) of your tooth. Infection that begins in the pulp chamber can travel through the root canals into the bone and cause jaw discomfort, damage, and other problems. Schedule a visit with our caring Made Ya Smile Dental general dentists if you notice any of the signs or symptoms that often indicate an infected tooth:
- Dull pain in the jaw
- Gray or discolored tooth
- Swelling or blister-like lesion on the gums
- Discomfort when biting down
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or sweets
What To Expect
At your root canal treatment consultation, we can talk about any fears or concerns that you have and choose a sedation dentistry method ideal for your level of anxiety if you prefer. Nitrous oxide (laughing) gas is suitable for mild anxiety while oral-conscious sedation may be better for more moderate dental fears. Dr. Prasifka and Dr. Nguyen understand that you may be nervous about your care and will keep you informed of the treatment progress as we perform your procedure.
We will thoroughly numb your tooth and jaw before starting your root canal. Once you are completely comfortable, our dentists will open the tooth and remove infected tissues from within the pulp and down into the roots of the tooth. Using special instruments, we will reshape the internal areas and fill the tooth with a special material to restore strength and function. A temporary sedative filling will then cover the opening and stay in place until your tooth heals.
A root canal removes the blood and nerve sources from a tooth. Teeth that receive root canal treatment are more brittle and likely to break or fracture. To protect your tooth and return proper appearance to your tooth structure, we may recommend a crown following your root canal therapy.
At the end of your visit, our team will give you instructions on how to take care of your tooth following a root canal procedure. If you received oral-conscious sedation for your procedure, you will need an adult to drive you home as you will be drowsy for a few hours until the effects wear off. Any post-op discomfort can usually be relieved with nonprescription anti-inflammatory medication. Dr. Prasifka and Dr. Nguyen may also recommend antibiotics to help treat your infected tooth. A follow-up visit will be scheduled for you at our Sugar Land, TX practice so that our dentists can check the healing and make sure the infection is resolved. Routine biannual cleaning and exam visits with our friendly team are also important to help maintain a healthy and comfortable smile.
Root canal therapy may be covered in part by your dental insurance plan. We will be sure to contact your provider and learn about your specific coverage before starting your endodontic treatment. Made Ya Smile Dental in Sugar Land, TX accepts most PPO dental insurance plans and can help you maximize your benefits. For those who are not using dental insurance or have out-of-pocket expenses, we offer a range of payment options and can provide information on low-cost financing through CareCredit® to help make your care affordable and easy to obtain.
