What Is Endodontic Retreatment?
An infected or damaged tooth that does not fully resolve following root canal therapy may require endodontic retreatment care. For some Sugar Land, TX patients, a new infection may have developed within the tooth or accessory canals may have gone undetected and untreated during the original procedure. Our general dentists may recommend a root canal retreatment procedure for teeth that exhibit signs of infection in the months or even years following original root canal therapy. Post-root canal treatment is performed in a similar fashion to the initial procedure and will clean and disinfect the internal pulp and canals of the tooth to treat any new or recurring infection. Talk to our Made Ya Smile Dental team today if you are noticing tooth pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms around a previously treated tooth. We will get you in to see one of our caring dentists right away.

Do I Need Endodontic Retreatment?
A root canal retreatment procedure may be the best type of care if you have a treated tooth that is still showing signs of infection or if new symptoms involving the same tooth are noticeable. Common symptoms indicating the need for retreatment are pain in the tooth or jaw, a blister-like lesion on the side of the gums, discomfort when biting down, and temperature sensitivity. Our dentists will do everything possible to save your tooth with root canal retreatment. In some situations, however, an apicoectomy (root removal) or tooth extraction may be best to restore health to your mouth. A consultation with our skilled and trained Sugar Land, TX team will help you decide the right type of care for your needs.
What Should I Expect During Endodontic Retreatment?
Our dentists perform root canal retreatments within our comfortable and modern practice. We offer sedation dentistry to keep you relaxed during your care and will numb the treatment areas thoroughly for the highest level of comfort. When you are ready, our team will reopen the tooth to assess your condition and remove the filling material previously placed. The pulp and canals of your tooth will be cleared of any infected tissue and then thoroughly disinfected. Our dentists will also look for any accessory canals and treat these structures as well. Once your tooth is prepared, we will add filling material in each canal and the center of the tooth and place a sedative filling to begin the healing process. A new crown or other restoration will be placed to protect your tooth when it fully heals and the infection resolves.
What Is the Recovery Like for Endodontic Retreatment?
Similar to when you received your initial root canal, it may be a good idea to rest for the first few days and avoid any physical activity. Our team will give you instructions on taking care of your treated tooth at home. Our dentists may give you a prescription for antibiotics to treat oral infection and recommend over-the-counter pain medication for any discomfort. To help maintain healthy teeth and gums, we encourage you to practice excellent oral hygiene care at home and keep up with your regular dental cleaning and exam appointments with our Made Ya Smile Dental team. During your visits, we will check the health of your retreated tooth and keep you informed of its progress.
